GreenHeart Students visit Sky Island Trail
On December 5th we were graced by a visit from a group of 16 year old students from various countries who have been staying with host families in the U.S.
They joined us as part of a larger group called GreenHeart, based in Chicago. Allison and Stephanie led the group to us via Camp Stevens.
On the Sky Island trail, we did a community service project which none of the girls had had experience with to date; removal of a non native species!
The bull thistle which invades our property in the wetter areas of the trail, has been on our radar for removal since summer 2010. On this day we removed a large swath of bull thistle as the new growth began to develop low lying leaves. The students learned about the philosophy behind removing non native species as we cleared the trail.
We also sang the graces of the decomposers in the soil: FBII: fungus, bacteria, invertibrates and insects. These were new ideas to enlighten some of the students on nature philosophy in the U.S.
