Exclusive Supporters of Volcan Mountain Hiking Event, Saturday, May 13th
Saturday, May 13th, VMF's Supporters of Volcan Mountain and guests are invited to 'Hike to the Source' of the San Dieguito River with Volcan Mountain Foundation staff and board members.
There are two hike options for this special three-way partnership for San Diego River Days. Our VMF hike group will visit the source of the Santa Ysabel Creek, then continue on to meet up with separate hike groups from the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy (SDRVC) and the San Diego River Park Foundation (SDRPF) deep in the Santa Ysabel East Preserve.
Early Hike to the Source
Date: Saturday, May 13th
Time: Starting at 7am, returning by 8:30am
Location: Santa Ysabel East Preserve, Farmer Road Staging Area
Description: We will take you along Farmer Road and 'beyond the gate" to Ironside Spring…the source of Santa Ysabel Creek, which is the main tributary to the San Dieguito River. The 3.5 mile hike of moderate-plus difficulty with 1,400' of elevation gain will take about 1 1/2 hours for fit hikers. We'll return back to the Farmer Road Staging Area, where you can head on your way, or continue onto the 'Back Trails Hike'...
Back Trails Hike
Date: Saturday, May 13th
Time: Starting at 9am, returning by 2pm
Location: Santa Ysabel East Preserve, Farmer Road Staging Area
Description: We will travel back trails that are normally closed to the public. Joining up with the Kanaka Loop Trail, we'll continue west to our meetup stop on the Coast to Crest trail section with the other groups. This is a moderately difficult, 7 mile round-trip segment with a 1,600' elevation gain. We'll be meeting groups with the San Diego River Park Foundation that will have hiked from the source of the San Diego River and the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy's Exploring our Sense of Place alumni that will have come along the Old Coleman Toll Road from the future site of San Diego County Parks' Santa Ysabel Nature Center.
Both hikes are free to Supporters of Volcan Mountain at the Individual or Family level. Donation for guests of Supporters is $10 for the day.
