The Trail
The VMF hike is an easy to moderate 2-mile round trip with an elevation gain/loss of approximately 200'.

The Volcan Mountain Trails & Ales adventure will take you 'behind the scenes' through VMF's Volcan Mountain Nature Center along Volcan Road and on VMF's Sky Island Trail, both of which are not openly-accessible to the public.

Experience the refreshing riparian beauty of Ironside Spring before you ascend through ancient pines, oaks, cedars and firs, along the Sky Island Trail to the James-Hubbell-designed lookout at almost a mile above sea level. The views across the San Diego and San Dieguito River watersheds to the are coast are incredible!

The Ales (or in this case, The Ciders!)
Apples are the star of the show during the fall in Julian, with flocks of tourists coming up to visit local orchards to pick apples and bring home fresh apple pie. In celebration of the Julian apple season, VMF is partnering with Julian Hard Cider (JHC) for the post-hike libations. Located at Julian Station, a popular local food and watering hole and historic apple packing facility, JHC will provide a complimentary flight of three tasters of their fresh-pressed hard cider, and of course you can purchase mugs of any of your favorites to drink there or get bottles to take home—they’ve also got some of the coolest logo-wear around!

Located conveniently adjacent to JHC inside Julian Station for hungry hikers to purchase lunch is Mr. Manita's Taco Bar & Fruteria, which specializes in hand-crafted, authentic Mexican food featuring local, organic and seasonal ingredients--VMF recommends the delicious burrito bowls!

The Guides
VMF Board Member and resident naturalist, Sharyl Massey will co-lead the hike with VMF's Executive Director, Colleen Bradley. Sharyl is an experienced outdoor educator, and always has amazing nature discoveries and knowledge to share—we call her Mother Nature. Colleen works day in and day out to lead the VMF community in protecting and preserving the natural treasures of Volcan Mountain. Both are passionate about their role as Volcan Mountain ambassadors!

For over 25 years, the Volcan Mountain Foundation staff, volunteers and community have been the ambassadors for connecting and engaging people of all walks and ages with the 15-mile long Volcan Mountain Range, and ensuring that the vital watershed sources, wildlands, and wildlife of the Range remain protected, pristine and wondrous for all generations.
