Volcan Mountain Foundation

Saturday, August 18th join County Parks staff on an evening sunset hike to the summit of the Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve. 

From the Five Oaks Trail, you'll marvel at incredible views of the orchards and vineyards below, and peer down into Banner Canyon and the Elsinore Fault that runs through it. We'll arrive at the summit just before sunset to enjoy the views from the Salton Sea to the San Diego coastline.

Our friends from Curiosity Peak Observatory in Julian and the Julian Dark Sky Network will be waiting at the summit with a variety of telescopes for a star gazing party. There's a new moon (no moon) that night, so conditions will be perfect for viewing the stars and planets!

IMPORTANT:
The hike back down to the trailhead will be in complete darkness, so make sure you bring a fully-charged flash light (and extra batteries…just in case). The hike includes an elevation gain of approximately 1,000 ft. in 2 miles. The overall hike is approximately 7 miles round trip. Inclement weather will cancel the event.

Bring: a fully-charged flash and extra batteries, water, and snacks for the summit

Wear: sturdy hiking shoes and dress in layers as the temperature can change dramatically as we reach the summit

Location: 1209 Farmer Road, Julian, CA 92036 just north of the Wynola Road intersection with Farmer Road

Park: along Farmer Road and walk 300 ft. up the gravel driveway to meet at the Hubbell gateway
