Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve Interpretive Hike with Canyoneers, Saturday, May 30th, 9am-2pm
On Saturday, May 30th join Canyoneers (volunteers with the San Diego Natural History Museum) for an interpretive hike to the scenic summit of San Diego Parks & Rec’s Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve (VMWP) starting at 9am. The 2,195-acre preserve offers an array of seasonal wildflowers in oak-pine woodland. At the summit, you’ll stop for lunch and enjoy a bird’s eye view of Julian, where on a clear day you can see the buildings in downtown San Diego and islands off the coast of Mexico and Southern California. From the summit you can also enjoy incredible views to the east of San Felipe Valley and the desert.
Canyoneers programs are interpretive nature walks, not endurance hikes, and Canyoneers try to accommodate the desires and abilities of all participants. However, some of the walks can be taxing, especially those in the desert or mountains. Check the online Museum calendar (www.sdnat.org/calendar) for cancellations due to park closures or emergencies, or call 619-232-3821; choose option 4 then option 1. In the case of inclement weather, Canyoneers still hike unless the trail is dangerous or impassable.
Meet at the Hubbell Gateway at 9am. The Hubbell Gateway is located approximately 300 feet up the gravel road from the VMWP parking area on (1209) Farmer Road. This is just north of the Wynola Road intersection with Farmer Road. This hike will include an elevation gain of approximately 1,000 ft in 2 miles, and cover a total distance of 5 miles. Please dress in layers as the temperature can change dramatically as we reach the summit. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and carry plenty of water. Bring a snack or lunch for the summit.
