Volcan Mountain Foundation

Saturday, October 8th at 8:00 am join San Diego County Parks Attendant Doug Andrews for a hike to the summit and a closed area of the Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve (VMWP).  Take in the panoramic views while hiking the VMWP’s Five Oaks trail, and enjoy a bird’s eye view of Julian, where on a clear day you can see the buildings in downtown San Diego and Islands off the coast of Mexico and Southern California. We will hike to the summit of the VMWP and then into a closed area of the Preserve that you don’t normally get to see to hike amongst an old-growth cedar forest.

This will be a strenuous hike with an elevation gain of 1,253 feet in 5.4 miles. The total round trip will be around 12 miles. Wear sturdy hiking shoes, bring plenty of water and snacks for the trail. Please dress in layers as the temperature can change dramatically. Be prepared for heat or cold! Park along Farmer Rd and meet at the Hubbell gateway by 8:00 am.  The Hubbell gateway is located approximately 300 feet up the gravel road from the VMWP parking area along Farmer Road (1209 Farmer Road, Julian, CA 92036)—this is just north of the Wynola Road intersection with Farmer Road. Inclement weather will cancel this event.
