Docent Training on the Mountain
Volcan Mountain Foundation held a Training on the Mountain to elucidate the Living History aspect of docenting. The VMF Founding Fathers and Mothers story was told by Kathleen Beck.
Education Advisor Mary Aldern taught a lesson in Living History based on her experience with playing the part of Lily at the Sequoia National Park this past summer.
As part of our training on this day, we delved into what interests us to do docenting in the first place. For some it may be mining history, for others Native American history; for still others it is the native flora and fauna. As we are developing our docent program we are creating niches for the volunteer. Learning about what interests us most can help us create the motivation needed to be involved.
We also hiked the Sky Island Trail and were docent led by John Raifsnider who has been developing Wonder Walks on the mountain. Assiting with various activites was Shean Fry, our number one docent in the education program.
