University of Wednesday Outdoor Education Classes
University of Wednesdays Outdoor Education is in full swing in the Julian Elementary School as well as survival skills classes for the Middle School.
The students learned to thatch a willow hut at the middle school in the Fall. Hut building 101 using native plants harvested in a sustainable way. This program also involves a series of classes on tracking, seedling propagation, and local native foods.
The students at the Elementary are learning from the San Diego Children Nature Collaborative lessons on the Oak Woodland Forest Habitat. This means that they are exploring and learning from their local habitat. They have been going into their nearby nature on Schoolyard Safari's with bug boxes and magnifying glasses to see just who lives on their playgound. The next step will be a journey into the Volcan Mountain region which sits just above their school.
VMF Education is going deeper into concerns within our forest habitat with the local student population to create a caring environmental ethic.
