Early Season Hike to the Volcan Summit-Sunday, March 30th
On Sunday, March 30th join County Park staff for an early spring hike to the scenic summit of the county's Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve (VMWP). Take in the panoramic views while hiking the Five Oaks Trail. Enjoy a bird’s eye view of Julian, where on a clear day you can see the buildings in downtown San Diego and islands off the coast of Mexico and Southern California. Park Attendant, Bill Augustus, will provide information on the history and geography of the area. Weather permitting we will be the first group to hike to the Summit before the regular spring opening on Saturday, April 5th. From the summit you can also enjoy incredible views to the east of San Felipe Valley and the desert.
Meet at the Hubbell Gateway at 10:00 AM. The Hubbell Gateway is located approximately 300 feet up the gravel road from the VMWP parking area on (1209) Farmer Road. This is just north of the Wynola Road intersection with Farmer Road. This hike will include an elevation gain of approximately 1,000 ft in 2 miles. Please dress in layers as the temperature can change dramatically as we reach the summit. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and carry plenty of water. Bring a snack or lunch for the summit. The hike will be canceled if it rains or snows. Please contact the Heise Park Ranger office for updates or more information, 760-765-4098.
