Experience the Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve (VMWP) on a hike up Volcan Mountain guided by the San Diego Natural History's Canyoneers. This 2,195-acre preserve offers an array of chaparral and oak-pine woodlands. The Canyoneers' docents will share information about these plants as you hike to the summit. From there you will enjoy an incredible view of the San Felipe Valley and Anza-Borrego Desert. You will also see downtown San Diego and the islands off the coast of Mexico and Southern California.
You will have two options for hiking: a shorter four-mile loop hike going up the shady Five Oaks Trail and a longer six-mile hike that will continue to Volcan Peak for a lunch stop and grand view of the area. This hike has an elevation gain/loss of up to 1,000 feet.
Wear: Sturdy hiking shoes and dress in layers as the temperature can change.
Bring: Plenty of water and a snack and/or lunch.

Trailhead Location: The group will leave from the Hubbell gateway trailhead off 1209 Farmer Road, Julian, CA just 300 feet up the gravel road from the VMWP trailhead.
Directions: From CA-78/79 in Julian, take Main Street north for 2.2 miles (Main Street becomes Farmer Road). Turn right on Wynola Road. Go 100 yards and then take the first left which is a continuation of Farmer Road. The preserve entrance is on the right. Park on the shoulder of the road. No facilities.
