The Summit Season has started!
Easter weekend marked the first full-weekend of 2012 for the opening of Volcan Mountain's mid-summit gate on weekends and holidays (weather-permitting), and what a glorious weekend to visit the summit! With temperatures in Julian in the 70s over the weekend, spring has definitely announced it's arrival, and the wildflowers are starting their show. From purple ceanothus down around the Hubbell gateway at the trailhead to yellow wallflowers, and baby blue-eyes along the way up to delicate cream cups, and California golden poppies as you travel along the summit ridge, the wildflowers will put on an ever-changing show over the next couple of months that you won't want to miss.
For a special behind-the-scenes look at the spring wonders of Volcan, don't miss the upcoming Wildflower Walk & Lunch with naturalist, wildflower expert and state parks specialist, Larry Hendrickson on Saturday, April 28th, starting at 9am. Reservations are required, and there are still a few more spaces available at $60 per person. E-mail or phone the VMF office at 760-765-2300 right away to make your reservations.
